Shaw Festival for First Time Theatre Goers

The Shaw Festival is one of the main attractions in Niagara on the Lake.  Situated on the main street, each of the three Shaw theatres offer a number of different productions each summer.  This year marks the 50th anniversary of the Shaw Festival, a momentous milestone by any standard.

The Shaw productions cover a variety of genres.  Each year’s shows will usually include comedies, musicals, dramas, and other types of productions.  Visit the Shaw Festival’s website for more information on the shows playing now at www.shawfest.com.

The Shaw has three theatres in Niagara on the Lake.  The Festival Theatre is the largest with just under 900 seats.  The building also houses the box office and another small theatre known as the Studio Theatre.  Further along the main street is both the Court House Theatre and Royal George Theatre.  While both of these are significantly smaller than the Festival Theatre, they do offer a more intimate experience for the spectators to be closer to the stage.

The Shaw’s ticket prices vary based on the seat location and show time.  Generally speaking, you will be looking at between $50 and $80 Canadian per seat.  A little known fact is that you may be able to get yourself a nice discount if you visit the box office on the day of your show to purchase the tickets.  The Shaw will often put tickets “on rush” in order to make last minute ticket sales at lower prices.  The only downside is that you will not be guaranteed a ticket in the event the show is sold out, and seats may not be available together.  It is up to you to decide whether or not you will want to risk it.
